From Chennai to the World: VISHAL NAVEEN’s Historic Moment in Global Wildlife Photography

Indian photographer makes history by being the first person to be shortlisted from India in Motion category

In a remarkable achievement that has placed Chennai on the global creative map, VISHAL NAVEEN has been shortlisted among the Top 15 photographers worldwide in the “Motion” category at the prestigious Sony World Photography Awards. Chosen from over 430,000 entries submitted across more than 200 countries, his recognition marks a historic first—making him the only Indian photographer ever to be shortlisted in the Motion category.

Hailing from Chennai, VISHAL NAVEEN’s journey is not one of overnight success but of relentless dedication spanning over 11 years in wildlife photography. What makes his accomplishment even more extraordinary is the fact that he is a doctor by profession. Balancing the responsibilities of a demanding medical career with the unpredictable and physically intense world of wildlife photography is no small feat. Yet, for VISHAL NAVEEN, passion has always found its place alongside profession.

Wildlife photography, for him, is more than capturing beautiful animals; it is about storytelling, patience, and immersing oneself in nature’s rhythm. Over the past decade, he has traveled extensively, refining his craft and learning to adapt to extreme environments. His work reflects a deep respect for wildlife and an unwavering commitment to portraying animals in their most natural and undisturbed states.

The photograph that secured his global recognition was taken in the heart of the African savannah under challenging nighttime conditions. The image features a giraffe captured using a long-exposure technique—an approach that requires precision, planning, and technical mastery. Unlike conventional wildlife shots that freeze action in sharp clarity, VISHAL NAVEEN’s image embraces motion, blending movement with atmosphere to create a dramatic and almost surreal visual narrative.

Capturing this image was far from easy. VISHAL NAVEEN and his team spent 14 to 16 hours each day inside an underground hide, beginning in the evening and continuing until the following afternoon.

He has been shortlisted not only in the Motion category, but also in the Wildlife category for an image of a wild African buffalo taken at night

Underground hides are specially designed structures built below ground level, allowing photographers to observe animals at eye level without disturbing their natural behavior. While these hides offer unique photographic opportunities, they also demand immense patience and endurance.

Inside the confined space, movement is limited, and silence is essential. Hours can pass without a single sighting. Temperatures fluctuate between the cool of night and the heat of day. Physical discomfort becomes part of the process. Yet, VISHAL NAVEEN remained focused, waiting for the right moment. When the giraffe finally approached, illuminated subtly against the vast darkness of the savannah, he executed his long-exposure shot with calculated precision.

The result is an image that conveys both grace and motion—an artistic representation of wildlife that transcends conventional documentation. It captures not only the physical presence of the animal but also the spirit of its movement across an untamed landscape.

The Sony World Photography Awards are widely recognized as one of the most respected platforms in the global photography community. To be shortlisted among the Top 15 in such a competitive category is an achievement that places VISHAL NAVEEN among the world’s leading contemporary photographers. More importantly, it brings international attention to Indian wildlife photography, showcasing the depth of talent emerging from the country.

For VISHAL NAVEEN, this milestone is deeply meaningful. As a medical professional, his daily life revolves around precision, responsibility, and care. Photography, in contrast, offers him a creative outlet—an opportunity to slow down, observe, and connect with nature in its purest form. The discipline from his medical career complements his photographic pursuits, instilling patience and attention to detail that are critical in the wild.

His achievement also serves as an inspiration for aspiring photographers who juggle full-time professions while nurturing creative dreams. VISHAL NAVEEN’s journey demonstrates that excellence is not limited by geography or career path. With perseverance and passion, even a boy from Chennai can leave a mark on a global stage.

Today, VISHAL NAVEEN stands as a symbol of dedication and quiet determination. His historic recognition in the Motion category is not just a personal triumph—it is a proud moment for Chennai and for India.

From the underground hides of Africa to international acclaim, his story is proof that when passion meets persistence, history can be made.
